Tunisia's Phosphate Production Capacity Drops 60%
Published: 2026-05-12

Tunisian Minister of Energy and Mines Mongi·Marzouk stated at a recent press conference that since 2010, Tunisia's phosphate industry productivity has declined by 60%, with losses reaching 5 billion dinars over the past five years.

Marzouk added that the Ministry of Energy and Mines has implemented a foundational plan to restore normal order in the phosphate industry. Gafsa Phosphate Company is undergoing transformation, and Tunisia Chemical Group will also provide production capital support to the phosphate industry to salvage the current massive losses.

The phosphate industry is one of the main drivers of Tunisia's national economic development. Since the “Jasmine Revolution,” continuous strikes and production stoppages caused by unrest have severely affected the normal order of the phosphate industry.
